SENECA ALLEGANY CASINO HONORED FOR SUPPORT OF HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS
Louisiana school system sends Good Citizen Award, notes of thanks
SALAMANCA, NEW YORK - When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast this past summer, Seneca Gaming Corporation donated nearly $20,000, as well as two truck-loads of food, clothing and other non-perishable goods to the Red Cross' relief efforts.
However, the news of the hurricane's devastation was especially troubling for Seneca Allegany Casino employee Mary Helena Hand, whose daughter is a Third Grade teacher at the Miller Wall Elementary School in Marrero, Louisiana.
While employees and patrons at both Seneca Niagara Casino and Seneca Allegany Casino generously took part in the effort to support the relief effort, Hand's co-workers wanted to do a little something extra.
The employees in the Promotions Department at Seneca Allegany Casino started a donation pool to help out the young students at Miller Wall Elementary. The money was used to buy clothing and sweaters for the students who are still dealing with cold and damp conditions brought on by the hurricane.
The generosity of the Seneca Allegany Casino employees did not go unnoticed, as the Promotions Department was recently honored with the Good Citizen Award by the Jefferson Parish Public School System. The award was given "for extraordinary contributions to our system so unselfishly given following Hurricane Katrina. System Superintendent Diane Roussel also sent a letter to the employees, thanking them for their act of kindness.
"The lessons you have taught our children and staffs are some of the most positive in life, the letter reads. "You have taught them the meaning of compassion and caring. You have made them aware of community, a very large community, of citizens who responded without being asked.
Hand also received a letter from the Principal of Miller Wall Elementary expressing the gratitude of the faculty and students.
"We are extremely proud of the generosity that all of our employees displayed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Barry E. Snyder, Sr., President of the Seneca Nation of Indians and Chairman of Seneca Gaming Corporation, said. "The appreciation that the Jefferson Parish Public School System has expressed speaks volumes about the compassionate nature and character of an outstanding group of employees at Seneca Allegany Casino. Their efforts to help the schoolchildren in Louisiana represent the best attributes of our community, our company and the Seneca Nation.
